Before I start, I need to say, I have a lot to say about this so this thread is gonna be long.
So, WWE is bringing back the Punjabi Prison Match at Battleground for Randy Orton and Jinder Mahal and a lot of people think it's a bad idea because of the history of the match.
For anyone who doesn't know, in 2006, The Great Khali (Yes, the 7 foot tall Indian wrestler who only had about 4 moves in his arsenal and still became World Heavyweight Champion), created the match as part of a rivalry he had with The Undertaker, but Khali wasn't medically cleared to compete in the match, so instead, he was replaced by Big Show and the match was won by Undertaker.
1 year later, Khali became World Champion but lost the title to Batista, Khali was granted his championship rematch, and the match was made a Punjabi Prison match. The match was won by Batista.
The rules of the match are as follows. There are 2 cages surrounding the ring made of steel reinforced bamboo, the inner cage has 4 doors that can be opened at any time at a wrestlers request so they can leave the inner cage, if they don't leave the cage through the door within 1 minute, then the door is padlocked shut and cannot be opened again (Personally that part confused me, since the first match had the Big Show and the second had The Great Khali, who again, invented the match, but both men seemed way to big to even fit through the doors). If all 4 doors are locked then the wrestlers have to leave the inner cage by climbing out. When a wrestler has escaped the inner cage, they then have to climb out over the outer cage and have both feet touch the arena floor.
The first problem that people have with the match is that it's associated with The Great Khali, so it would make sense to see it in a negative way.
The second proplem people have with the match is that both Punjabi Prison matches in the past have apparently been terrible, I've never seen either match, but based on what people have said about the match in the past, it's safe to assume, people don't like it. It would make sense that the second match was bad since it had The Great Khali, but I'm not sure why the first seemed bad, since Undertaker and Big Show are both good in the ring, although, again, I haven't seen the matches before, so if I watch them, maybe I'll understand it a bit more.
Now, that being said, is it a bad idea for WWE to bring back the Punjabi Prison Match for Jinder Mahal vs Randy Orton? Well...not exactly. While the match receives negative opinions from some fans since it's associated with Khali, it's possible to move on from that and just recognize it as another unique match type, since other match types are rarely associated with the people that created them (I.E. Pat Patterson & Royal Rumble, Chris Jericho & Money in the Bank). Also, while the previous 2 Punjabi Prison matches have been bad, that doesn't mean that this one, or any potential future ones will be bad too, and considering the participants for this one are Jinder Mahal and Randy Orton, they both have the ability to put on a good match. For all we know this match could change the way wrestling fans see the Punjabi Prison Match.
What do you people think? Is WWE bringing back Punjabi Prison a good thing or a bad thing?
